Using Nature As Design Inspiration

Inspired By Nature

Nature has always been a source of inspiration for artists and designers. Whether it is the colour, texture, form or detail, the natural world offers endless possibilities for creativity. This is evident in countless designs, from the iconic William Morris patterns to the Lotus Temple in New Delhi. It’s no wonder that many of us aspire to bring the outdoors inside our homes.

Your Seasonal Colours

Sophie Robinson, an interior designer, talks about seasonal personalities in interior design, and how we are naturally drawn to interiors that make our hearts sing. Taking her seasonal personality quiz, I found that the colours associated with the season were the colours I usually wear, and they make me happy. So, how can you work out your seasonal colours? Firstly, take a look at your wardrobe. What colours do you see? Secondly, what colours make you happy? What colours do you naturally get drawn to? And, what colours make you cringe? Trust your instincts, but remember, when mixing and matching colours in a room, keep the same undertones: clean, warm, dirty, or cool. Mixing across these will produce a palette that doesn’t sit right.

Using Natural Textures To Elevate Your Interior

Natural textures are always a good choice whether you prefer an industrial or country cottage style. Wooden furniture, terracotta, stone, cork, marble, cotton, and silk are just a few of the materials you can use to elevate your interior. It is essential not to follow trends slavishly, but don’t be afraid to pick out key pieces. Currently, cork and pulped paper lighting are all the rage, with high-street stores like Zara Home producing some beautiful and affordable designs.

Hunting For Unique And Interesting Pieces

One way to find unique and interesting pieces is to search local antique centres, vintage fairs, and local artisan markets. These places can be treasure troves of beautiful items that support local businesses. Older pieces like glassware and ceramics were often based on nature and have intricate details, making them a perfect addition to any interior. Reclamation yards often have Victorian/Edwardian tiles that can be used as great little coasters or small splashbacks in downstairs toilets.

Nature-inspired Fabrics And Wallpapers

Fabric and wallpaper designs are an obvious and often the easiest way to bring nature into your home. The ongoing trend for florals provides a vast range to choose from, with the most recent version of Morris wallpapers in collaboration with Ben Pentreath being a classic pattern with contemporary pinch colour combinations. If you want to try florals, but aren’t brave enough to go all out, start small. Pick a small room, frame a sample wallpaper, or add a couple of cushions or a duvet cover.

Nature And It’s Importance In The Home

Nature provides an endless supply of inspiration for interior design. From colours to textures, there are countless ways to bring the outside in. Trust your instincts when choosing colours and materials, and don’t be afraid to mix and match. Finding unique pieces from local businesses and using fabric and wallpaper designs are all great ways to incorporate nature into your home. With a little creativity and a touch of nature, you can transform your interior into a space that truly makes your heart sing.
